Big Scores In The Surf On Day 1 Of The Toyota Australian SUP Titles

COOLANGATTA/QLD (October 12th/2015): New South Wales pair Harry Maskell and Toby Cracknell sent a strong message to the rest of the field in round one of the open men’s surf division on the opening day of competition at the Toyota Australian SUP Titles on the Gold Coast today. In 1-2ft waves and cross shore wind, the pair posted the two highest heat scores of the first round, Maskell racking up a 17.65 and Cracknell a 16.50 heat total. Cracknell set the tone in heat 1 of the day against Queenslander and heavy hitter Jackson Close whilst Maskell took out heat 6 at a canter. Other round 1 winners included Western Australia’s Jake Jakovich, New South Welshmen James Casey and South Australia’s Kai Bates. In the women’s open draw, Queensland’s Shakira Westdrop got off to a winning start taking down fellow Banana bender Kaylan Dahl with a heat total of 12.40. With similar conditions forecast, tomorrow should be another great day of action with champions to be crowned in all the surf SUP divisions. Today signalled the beginning of almost a week of SUP action on the Gold Coast, with approximately 250 competitors to represent their states across three disciplines: surfing; technical race between 4-8km of several laps in and out through the surf; and a 20-30km marathon. Valued Surfing Australia partner Toyota is again naming rights partner to the event, which has attracted nearly 250 of the country’s top SUP exponents. The 2015 Toyota Australian SUP Titles is proudly supported by Toyota, Gold Coast City Council, Connecting Southern Gold Coast, Currumbin RSL, Nikon, Surfing Australia, Surfing Queensland and AuSUP.
